What is the difference between carnauba wax and synthetic sealant? What will look better on my car?
Carnauba wax is made from natural ingredients found on the leaves of special trees. Manufacturers harvest this material and use it as the base for their wax. Generally, the content of this material, called “carnauba” will dictate how much the wax costs. For example, a wax with 50% carnauba by volume will cost more than a wax with 30% carnauba by volume.
Carnauba wax tends to give a very warm and deep look to paints. Many clients have said “my car looks like it’s glowing!” If your vehicle is a dark colour such as a black or dark blue, a carnauba wax generally will be the best choice in terms of looks.
A synthetic sealant is a man-made product developed with special manufactured chemicals. Synthetic sealant provides longer lasting protection to paints due to the fact that chemical labs can manipulate the chemicals in the product to reach the desired product characteristics. Truth be told, technically both a carnauba and a synthetic sealant are forms of sealant. They seal the paint from harmful conditions.
Synthetic sealant tends to give a very wet look to paints. Think of how your vehicle looks when you spray it with water; this is the look that a sealant will give you. If your vehicle is light colour such as silver or white, a synthetic sealant will be the best choice in terms of looks.
In terms of protection however, synthetic sealants have the edge over carnauba waxes. Because carnauba waxes are based on natural chemicals, they do not withstand environmental stresses as well as synthetic sealants. It is worth noting however that there are many carnauba waxes that will outlast a synthetic sealant in terms of protection. Generally these waxes will have a lower percentage of carnauba by volume, and be substituted with special chemicals to boost its protection ability.
As technology continues to evolve and change the market of premium detailing products, the gap between carnaubas and synthetic sealants becomes smaller. The underlying difference essentially will become solely based on its chemical makeup and looks.
